THE LIECHTENSTEIN REGALIA

The Principality of Liechtenstein never had its own regalia, although the princes of Liechtenstein possessed a crown and a ceremonial sword made for them in the 17th century. In 1623 a princely crown and a sword were commissioned by Prince Charles of Liechtenstein on the occassion of being raised to princely rank. The regalia were ordered from the imperial jeweller in Frankfurt/Main, Daniel de Briers. It took three years to to complete the commission. The gold frame of the crown was made in Frankfurt and then it was sent to Prague where it was set with jewels coming from the Liechtenstein treasury: 129 diamonds, 16 rubies, 26 pearls and several other gems. The regalia were kept in Prague, but after the death of Prince Charles in 1627, his heir Prince Charles Eusebius, took the regalia with him to Valtice in Moravia in 1629. In the 1677 inventory of the regalia there is no further mention of the sword. Only the crown is mentioned as being kept in the vaults of the Liechtenstein Palace in Vienna. The crown was an object of family dispute throughout the first half of the 18th century. Its existence was recorded for the last time in official documents in 1756. Although the crown is mentioned in correspondence after 1756 it is impossible to trace its fate. On the death of Prince Francis Joseph I in 1781 the crown could not be found. It was simply missing and there was no reliable explanation to what actually had happened to it. It might have been sold to Emperor Joseph II, who is known to have purchased about that time a costly ornament from the Liechtensteins. But this hasn't been proven. A modern copy of the crown is kept at the Landesmuseum in Vaduz.
